Google, a behemoth in the field of online and AI technology, recently rolled out a new ChatGPT rival, Bard, for testing. The state-of-the-art AI chatbot has been designed to respond to users’ queries and bases its answers on data from the internet. Google CEO Sundar Pichai brought up the soon-to-be publicly available AI chatbot in an email to his employees, where he warned them of particular mistakes the bot may make.
He wrote in the email: “Things will go wrong, but the user feedback is critical to improving the product and the underlying technology.” Currently, Bard is still in its beta stage, as it is only available in the US and UK and requires users to sign up for a waitlist to gain access.
Google also highlighted hopes of additional countries gaining access to the chatbot in the future. As to why Bard is such a valuable addition in the AI field, Google claims that “You can use Bard to boost your productivity, accelerate your ideas and fuel your curiosity. You might ask Bard to give you tips to reach your goal of reading more books this year, explain quantum physics in simple terms or spark your creativity by outlining a blog post.”
To improve the AI chatbot, Pichai acknowledged the 80,000 Google employees who worked tirelessly to test it in the company-wide dogfood. Despite Google’s efforts, however, Bard had been met with criticism regarding its inappropriate responses and factual errors.
Google reacted quickly to the criticism and asked its own employees to lend a hand in rewriting the responses and revising Bard’s errors. In a sense, this gave the employees a chance to make their input in a revolutionary tech project and take ownership of it. It is this initiative at the core of Google which makes the company such a huge success today.
Sundar Pichai has been at the helm of Google since 2015 and has continually steered the company in the right direction. His inspiring entrepreneurial spirit and technological prowess are evident throughout his tenure, especially in the development of new products such as Bard. Pichai’s email reflects his enthusiasm and zeal to bring cutting-edge products to the world, as well as his care for the well-being of Google staff.
As mentioned before Bard is still in its testing phase, making it an interesting product to look out for in the upcoming months. Bard’s successes and failures will be watched closely and will undoubtedly shape the current technological landscape for many years to come.
