A recent study conducted by researchers from the University of California, San Diego, John Hopkins and other universities found that OpenAI’s chatGPT, a chatbot often used for medical advice and care, is more empathetic than human doctors. The study evaluated responses from the chatbot and verified physicians from Reddit using a five-point scale, taking into account “quality of information” and “empathy or bedside manner” provided. Surprisingly, the chatbot scored 3.6 times higher than its human counterparts in terms of quality, and 9.8 times higher in terms of its empathic response.
This revelation may seem optimistic, but it is important to note that these findings don’t guarantee accurate diagnosis. Despite the chatbot’s aptitude for empathetic responses, it is still prone to errors and misdiagnoses due to having limited training data. Thus, the primary reason why a doctor would be cautious when utilizing the chatbot is its potential to give false information.
Nevertheless, the study has inspired further exploration of AI assistants, particularly for messaging purposes. AI’s potential continues to show promise and may soon even become a pivotal part of the healthcare ecosystem due to its interpretational prowess.
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and other tech giants are investing in chatbot technology and integrating AI in their services. SayHi To ChatGPT’s Incognito Mode is an example of these efforts, where the tech company OpenAI is striving to give users more data control. Nonetheless, it is still important to note the risks associated with AI and seek professional help from real doctors. Doing so will help ensure users get accurate diagnoses as well as the best possible care.
