A recent study found that students did significantly better than a artificial intelligence (AI) bot at accounting exams. The students achieved an average score of 76.7 per cent, compared to 47.4 per cent for the AI bot, ChatGPT. Though ChatGPT outscored the human students at 11.3 per cent of questions, the AI struggled with tax, financial, and managerial assessments – which require more financial and mathematical know-how. This was particularly noticeable in the questions related to Accounting Information Systems (AIS) and auditing where ChatGPT outperformed the students.
The research into how well AI bots can answer accounting exam questions is an invaluable exploration that gives insight into the capabilities of AI and its potential for the accounting sector. It also serves as a reminder of the value of human expertise, especially in finance-related fields.
