Spain’s Leader Pushes for Global AI Regulation at Meeting with OpenAI CEO

Date:

Last week, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman demonstrated to the United States Congress the importance of managing the risks of Artificial Intelligence. On Monday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sachez met with Altman in Madrid to go over Artificial Intelligence and its utility in driving economic growth, decreasing inequality, and resolving global problems.

During the meeting in Madrid, Sachez highlighted the significance of constructing global regulatory bodies to oversee Artificial Intelligence. Earlier in the year, just before ChatGPT grabbed the planet’s attention, Spain had already taken the initiative to become the first European state to start working on a governmental body devoted to supervision of Artificial Intelligence. Spain has also announced $540 million for advancing AI within the country.

In response to potential issues that AI could generate for democracy, Altman declared to the US Congress last week that the advantages of AI surpassed the potential threats, and expressed his willingness to collaborate with governments in order to prevent any dangerous outcomes.

OpenAI is a research laboratory considering advanced natural language processing, machine learning, and artificial general intelligence. Collaborating with various research labs and institutions around the world, OpenAI is driven by its mission to “ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity”. Its projects such as GPT-3, which utilizes neural networks in order to generate human-like text content, have received world-wide attention.

Sam Altman is the CEO of OpenAI. He was the president of Y Combinator from 2014 to 2020, and has served as an investor in a variety of tech companies. Altman has contributed to the development of the field of AI, mainly through his focus on demonstrative AI applications such as healthcare, robotics, and autonomous vehicles.
