E-commerce company Shopify has reportedly requested its customer-support team to test an AI-powered translation bot, following the layoffs of 20% of its workforce, or more than 2,000 people, in May. Using OpenAI’s technology, the bot translates chat conversations in multiple languages into English directly within Shopify’s internal chat tool called Athena. Shopify has been actively experimenting with AI in the Support division, aiming to troubleshoot issues for its millions of merchants. Last March, the firm launched a chatbot powered by ChatGPT-AI technology, which recommends products based on shoppers’ choices.
