7 novelists, Kim, Oh, Shin, Chae Kang D., Nappelganger, Yoon, and Park, explore creativity with ChatGPT in the collaborative project, manifesto. Writers detailed their experiences working with the chatbot in writing logs and reviews which show overlapping opinions. While some found success and were content with their collaboration, others found it a strain to work with ChatGPT. Kim, a physicist and writer, composed the story titled ‘The Empty City’, portraying a virtual and abandoned world; a girl wearing a white dress with her hair braided like a flower was described by ChatGPT which surprised the author.
Though the chatbot was diligent in following the instructions, writer Oh found that the messages generated by ChatGPT were too typical and cliched; repeating the word ‘longing’ between the two Koreas when it was not used as the specified keyword. The other stories created by fellow writers in the project- ‘Longings and Dreams’ by Oh and ‘Manifesto’ by Shin involved AI in creative writing and evoked conversation regarding its utilization in the future. The anthology has been translated into English using AI DeepL translator and the cover art designed by Midjourney, a generative artificial intelligence program.
One of the key people in this project was Park, the editor of this anthology. She portrays a meaningful message in her work; that no matter these advancements in technology, there are still certain areas that can only be understood and reflected by human intelligence. She also noted her relief in seeing that readers were accepting to such projects and that it is a step in understanding the use of AI in the near future.
