Today, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, met with Sam Altman, CEO and co-founder of the Artificial Intelligence firm OpenAI, to discuss the progress of Artificial Intelligence and ways to protect democratic values. The meeting, held in La Moncloa, Spain, was attended by the First Vice President, Nadia Calviño, the General Secretary for Economic Affairs, Manuel de la Rocha, and OpenAI representatives.
The President promoted the approval of the Charter of Digital Rights and the need for a global AI supervisory body. He explained that the Spanish Government is committed to protecting the rights of citizens and wants to ensure that the development of Artificial Intelligence follows democratic values and prioritize transparency. He also highlighted the importance of the upcoming approval of the European regulation on Artificial Intelligence, which would be a priority for the Spanish presidency of the EU council.
In addition, Spain has launched an ICO Next Tech Fund to support leading startups and has allocated 500 million euros of the Recovery Plan to accelerate the development of Artificial Intelligence in the country. As a result of these initiatives, Spain has become a pioneer in the development of AI, as well as the supervision of this technology. The Spanish Government has also approved the creation of the first Spanish AI Supervision Agency (AESIA) in A Coruña and the EU has chosen Seville to host the Center for Algorithmic Transparency.
