Samsung Unveils Galaxy S24 Series with Galaxy AI Features and One UI 6.1 Software

During the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event held earlier today, Samsung introduced its latest lineup of premium smartphones, the Galaxy S24 series. These new devices, including the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra, are the company’s first phones to feature Galaxy AI, a comprehensive suite of AI-powered functions and applications. Additionally, they come equipped with the highly anticipated One UI 6.1 software.

One of the most exciting aspects of this announcement is that many of the groundbreaking Galaxy AI features will also be made available on existing Galaxy smartphones before the end of the first half of this year. Samsung plans to bring the power of Galaxy AI to over 100 million Galaxy devices worldwide in 2024 alone.

During the event, TM Roh, President and Head of Samsung MX, the brand’s Mobile Division, expressed his enthusiasm for this expansion, saying, Galaxy AI in the Galaxy S24 series is a hybrid AI that combines both on-device and cloud-based AI capabilities. This year, we will introduce Galaxy AI to approximately 100 million Galaxy smartphones, aiming to expand mobile AI globally. This announcement suggests that either existing phones will receive some of the Galaxy AI features, or the company will incorporate them into future mid-range devices.

TM Roh also predicted a double-digit growth in sales for the Galaxy S24 series, surpassing the success of its predecessor, the Galaxy S23. Despite a current slowdown in the smartphone market, Roh emphasized that the demand for high-end phones is continuously rising. He stated, We take the decrease in shipment volume seriously and are committed to improving our sales, marketing, and product competitiveness in all sectors. After losing its leading position to Apple in 2023, Samsung hopes to reclaim its throne this year through strong sales of the Galaxy S24 series.

The Galaxy S24 series introduces several impressive features, such as Circle to Search with Google. Users can simply long-press the home screen icon or gesture area, or draw a circle on the screen, to access additional information from the internet via Google. This feature provides quick access to details about products, plants, books, and more. Other AI-driven capabilities include real-time language translation during voice calls, voice-to-text conversion, AI-based image and video editing, and the ability to transform normal videos into slow-motion videos. Concerns about battery life due to these advanced AI features were addressed by Roh, who assured users that most of the AI processing occurs directly on the device, minimizing any impact on battery performance.

Despite rumors of potential charges for Galaxy AI features, Samsung’s terms and conditions state that these features will remain free until at least 2025. Furthermore, TM Roh clarified that the company has no immediate plans to charge consumers for AI features, at least until more advanced AI functionalities are added, which would require substantial investment.

In addition to the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung teased another innovative product at the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event—the Galaxy Ring. Based on customer surveys, Samsung recognized the need for a more compact device designed for sleep and fitness tracking. The ring form factor offers enhanced comfort and portability, aligning with the lifestyle preferences of many users. Although no specific information regarding features, pricing, or availability was revealed, the Galaxy Ring is expected to launch later this year alongside the highly anticipated Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 models.
