Samsung is said to be developing a Large Language Model (LLM) solution, similar to ChatGPT, with plans of introducing it at the end of July 2023. Reports suggest that Samsung Research is leading this project, and the company has allocated significant resources to ensure swift development. Sources indicate that the project is aimed at boosting various business processes, including software development, document summarization, and translation. However, unlike AI tools from other tech giants, Samsung’s solution will not be available to the public initially. The company plans to use it for internal business purposes, with hopes that AI could shorten the period of software development and semiconductor design.
There were suggestions from earlier reports that Samsung was in talks with domestic tech firm Naver to jointly develop the AI tool. However, a recent report from South Korea indicates that Samsung plans to go solo, after a high-level management meeting attended by the Executive Chairman Lee Jae-yong. Potential collaborations with Open AI, Microsoft, and Google were reportedly discussed, but the company decided to develop an in-house solution as soon as possible.
Samsung appears to be in a hurry to come up with a solution, following the leakage of confidential company information earlier this year. In March, the company gave some employees in the semiconductor division access to ChatGPT to speed up business processes, and it ended up leaking confidential information, leading to a ban on the use of all external tools. Samsung is now hurrying to come up with an in-house solution that doesn’t pose such risks.
Samsung has not yet released a name for its AI tool, and there’s no word yet on whether the company will release a public version. However, if the reported launch timeline of July end is accurate, then we may hear more about Samsung’s AI tool during its Galaxy Unpacked event on July 27. Samsung has already confirmed that the event will include the launch of new foldables, tablets, and smartwatches.
