Samsung Galaxy S24 Phones Unveiled: AI Features Aim to Challenge Apple Dominance
South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics has officially unveiled its latest line of premium smartphones, the Galaxy S24 series. In an effort to challenge Apple’s dominance in the smartphone market, Samsung has incorporated multiple artificial intelligence (AI) features into its new devices. The announcement comes after Apple surpassed Samsung in smartphone shipments in 2023, dethroning the South Korean company for the first time since 2010.
Samsung’s strategy is to attract buyers by offering various AI functions in its Galaxy S24 models. These functions include simultaneous translation of foreign language phone calls, AI summaries and translation of voice recordings, generative editing of photos to fill in non-existent backgrounds, and a feature that turns real-time videos into slow motion by using AI to fill in non-existent frames.
One standout feature of the Galaxy S24 series is the two-way voice translation in real-time during live phone calls conducted in two different languages. Samsung claims that the Galaxy S24 series is the first-ever smartphone to offer this feature. The on-device AI function, available in 13 different languages, is powered by Samsung’s own generative AI training.
Additionally, the Galaxy S24 phones include a circle-to-search function that allows users to search any part of an image on the screen using Google. Other AI features include AI translation and the ability to change the tone of messages based on different contexts such as casual, formal, business, or social media.
On-device AI has been touted as a more secure option for personal information, as it does not require sending data to the cloud for processing. Companies like Samsung and Qualcomm are promoting on-device AI as the future of smartphones.
While only a small percentage of smartphones shipped in 2024 will be AI-capable, data provider Canalys forecasts that this number will grow to 45 percent by 2027. Industry analysts believe that generative AI functions will have a significant impact on the smartphone market, particularly in enhancing user experience. However, it may take time for these functions to incorporate more data and provide increased value to consumers.
The Galaxy S24 series will be available for sale starting on January 31. In the United States, the base Galaxy S24 will be priced at $799, while the higher-specification models, the S24 Plus and S24 Ultra, will be priced at $999 and $1,299 respectively. Samsung has maintained the prices of the base model and Plus variant at the same level as last year, with only a $100 increase in the price of the Ultra.
With its latest AI features, Samsung is aiming to regain its position as a leader in the smartphone market and challenge Apple’s dominance. The success of the Galaxy S24 series will be closely watched to see if Samsung can regain its momentum and attract consumers looking for innovative AI capabilities in their smartphones.
