Sam Altman, OpenAI CEO, Visiting Congress

Date:

OpenAI is an American artificial intelligence (AI) research laboratory, founded in 2015, with the mission of promoting friendly AI development with the aim of cautionary and beneficial applications. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman is scheduled to visit the United States Capitol next week to inform legislators about the advances of AI technology. This effort has been organized by House leadership with the goal of creating an understanding of upcoming trends in the field.

Altman will be among a number of high-profile figures in the technological sector to update lawmakers about the present and future of AI. During April, House leadership members hosted AI briefings with Professors Antonio Torralba and Aleksander Madry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The attendees, including Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), said the lectures gave them an overview of AI processing complexities.

The invitation of Altman to Congress is the latest initiative of House leadership to bring government representatives up to speed in the ever-changing world of technology. McCarthy conveyed that this move is part of a series of steps towards educating everybody on the subject. OpenAI, and its CEO, are contributing to the discussion on the ethics, applications and societal implications posed by AI.
