Sam Altman and Shou Zi Chew of OpenAI Make Time 100 Most Influential People List

Date:

This year’s Time magazine’s annual list of the top 100 most influential people included two new entrants – OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew. Both these business leaders have recently come under the spotlight for their respective companies’ success.

OpenAI, a research laboratory co-founded by Elon Musk, recently released a chatbot called ChatGPT. Despite being praised for its advanced capabilities, it has equally been met with scrutiny due to the possibility of it aiding plagiarism and the spread of misinformation.

In the same year, TikTok, a popular mobile-based video-sharing platform owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, has been the subject of controversy with several governments issuing ban orders based on ownership clashes. In order to mediate the overlaps in privacy policies, Chew recently testified before Congress.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has earned an impressive reputation in the technology and business world. Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky described him as “If anyone knows where this is going, it’s Sam. But Sam also knows that he doesn’t have all the answers. He often says, ‘What do you think? Maybe I’m wrong?'” Altman himself has voiced his concerns over the potential dangers posed by AI, saying OpenAI is “a little bit scared” of AI’s potential.

Shou Zi Chew has lead the Chinese tech powerhouse ByteDance to unforeseen heights since becoming the CEO of TikTok in 2021. Despite the banning orders and the numerous tensions between policy regulations, Chew has managed to establish a strong presence in the digital world, having been recently invited by the White House to discuss the privacy policy conflicts.
