Robot Dog Learns to Communicate with ChatGPT

Date:

Recently, a remarkable integration of ChatGPT AI, developed by OpenAI, into Boston Dynamics’ robot dog, Spot, gained a lot of attention worldwide. Santiago Valdarrama, a machine-learning engineer, successfully accomplished the task. In order to demonstrate the capabilities of this integration, a video was shared on Twitter where Spot was seen conversing with the ChatGPT system. Spot utilized text-to-speech AI from Google to articulate the answers upon receiving queries from the AI concerning its battery level, mission details, and more. The video was captioned, “We integrated with our robots. We had a ton of fun building this.”

Valdarrama explained on Twitter that robots daily carry out automated missions that involve complicated configuration files. To retrieve certain information related to the missions manually is a time-consuming process. Therefore, ChatGPT is used to facilitate the querying process. The configuration files and mission results are processed through the ChatGPT and then questions are asked within that context. Additionally, Valdarrama and his team have developed a system that allows them to obtain real-time answers from the robots by comprehending the inquiries, analyzing the files, and developing the appropriate response.

Comments from the video including Louie Bacaj’s accounted that the concept is similar to a Discord bot created within the Smallbets.co community, presenting command queries and relying on OpenAI for more general questions. Other users were keenly shocked upon the capabilities of the robot dog, interpreting the accomplishment as the start of the Terminator movie.

Santiago Valdarrama is currently a Machine Learning Engineer at FlightViz, where he focuses on solving problems by turning raw data into automated solutions through artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision. His works have resulted in fascinating advances in the robotics domain. OpenAI is a non-profit Artificial Intelligence Research laboratory based out of San Francisco, California. It is focussed on developing friendly Artificial General Intelligence with the hope to promote safety. The company has received a major funding of 1 billion by Microsoft.
