Professor Tapan K. Gandhi, Associate Professor in the Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Cadence Chair Professor of AI and Automation at IIT Delhi, commented on the report, stating that it aims to dispel misconceptions surrounding online gaming and challenges the notion that these games are purely based on luck. Through their extensive research, the team discovered compelling evidence that Poker and Rummy indeed demand a level of innate understanding, leading to the development of cognitive abilities. Furthermore, they noticed that players’ softer skills, such as decision-making under pressure and memory retention, significantly improved over time.

Deepak Dhayanithy, Associate Professor of Strategic Management at IIM Kozhikode, who played a significant role in publishing an earlier report establishing Poker as a game of skill, shared his views on this study. He asserted that the analysis provided no room for doubt; it is skill, not chance, that drives long-term success in online card games like Poker and Rummy. The study’s findings revealed non-linear trends in skill variables and winning percentages, defying randomness and unequivocally indicating players’ expertise and patience. Both online and offline, skill remains the deciding factor, reducing variability and resembling other sports such as Cricket and Golf. Dhayanithy concluded by stating that this research enriches our understanding of cognitive prowess in the gaming arena.
The IIT study employed mathematical tools to quantitatively assess whether skill plays a significant role in long-term success in online Poker and Rummy. A wide range of user data was analyzed, covering individuals who had played between 30 to 100 games in formats involving 2-player, 3-player, and 6-player configurations. The results indicated that skill variables in both Poker and Rummy improved as users engaged in more games. The measured correlation between users’ win rates was an impressive 0.904, signifying a positive relationship and further emphasizing the dominance of skill over luck. This consistent win rate underscores the fact that unraveling the intricacies and strategies of the game can substantially enhance one’s performance. Therefore, players who dedicate time and effort to understanding the nuances of the game have a greater likelihood of maintaining a higher win rate.
