Reid Hoffman Criticizes Elon Musk on Proposal to Halt AI Development

Date:

Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, recently took a dig at Elon Musk during a discussion at the Milken Institute’s Global Conference 2023. Hoffman voiced his disagreement with an open letter Musk signed, which called for a six-month pause on developing AI systems that are stronger than GPT-4 until precautionary measures are taken. Hoffman pointed out that while Musk was signing the letter, he was simultaneously looking to create a team and stand up an AI project of his own.

Musk announced his intentions to build a “maximum truth-seeking AI” dubbed “TruthGPT” last month on Fox News, which is an apparent spin on OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015, though he left the board three years later. It was also recently reported that he has partnerships with Tesla and SpaceX investors for building an AI startup and that he is launching a similar project through Twitter.

Hoffman has mentioned his views on this issue before; he commented during an appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that he was opposed to the idea of an AI pause, and went as far as saying that Musk’s motives weren’t as noble. He criticized Musk’s desire to build the AI himself and stated that larger models tend to be safer and align better with human interests, and that Musk should realize the potential dangers of him slowing down research while he’s speeding up.

LinkedIn is a social networking and job search service founded by Reid Hoffman and other partners in 2003. It is now one of the most popular professional networking sites in the world, with over 706 million users worldwide and over 33 million active job listings. It helps people to build stronger connections with potential employers, and even assists users with job searching and career advice.

Elon Musk is considered one of the most influential entrepreneurs of the 21st century, having successfully founded multiple companies, among which are Tesla and SpaceX. Tesla, under Musk’s leadership, became the first American car manufacturer to produce a car that runs entirely on electricity, while SpaceX was the first private company to launch, land, and reuse a spacecraft. He continues to break boundaries in the fields of AI and space exploration.
