Regulating ChatGPT – A Necessity

Date:

As technology rapidly advances, the world has seen a meteoric rise in new generations of AI like ChatGPT and GPT-4. With this, debates have started to surface around the role of artificial general intelligence and the implications it can have on society. This has resulted in many governments, such as the European Union and China, beginning to consider ways to regulate these technologies.

The EU has mainly focused on the protection of personal information and on how to require companies that use generative AI to properly license the data they use to train their AI models. Similarly, China is implementing regulations to prevent generative AI content from being used to undermine the government while ensuring core values of Chinese socialism still reflect in the generated content.

In the US, discussions are being held on how to ensure user safety, while preventing generative AI from being abused. The most difficult challenge in this debate is the lack of explainability and thus a lack of understanding of how AI can be used to benefit or harm society. After all, AI technology has now surpassed the capabilities of humans, so it’s important to ensure sufficient guardrails are in place to protect us.

ChatGPT is an AI technology that is yet to offer any explainability. Authors developing it are still trying to figure out why it’s been so successful, and so it’s impossible to estimate how its capabilities will look in 5-10 years time. It’s therefore a real concern that if ChatGPT is capable of writing and reading documents and can surpass humans in quality, it could become increasingly self-sufficient, leading to worrying questions about what it may do with its human users.

It’s important that governments worldwide collaborate and put together regulations quickly to ensure artificial general intelligence does not become a danger to the human race. By increasing the focus on explainability, AI companies can direct development of AI technology onto a safer and more sustainable path.

ChatGPT is an AI technology developed by a team of international researchers from various science and technology fields. Led by AI researcher Dr. Zi-Yao Chen, this team has been focused on developing new generations of AI systems as well as researching viable ways to explain the technology and how it can be used responsibly. With their ongoing developments and research efforts, the team is dedicated to showing the power of AI technology in a safe and responsible manner.
