Recently, prominent members of the AI community, including Elon Musk and deep learning pioneer Yoshua Bengio, put forward an open letter calling for a “pause” in the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms more powerful than OpenAI’s GPT-4. This has sparked vigorous debate in the scientific and tech realms. Ray Kurzweil, a director of engineering at Google and co-founder and board member of Singularity Group, Singularity Hub’s parent company, expressed his opinions on the matter.
Kurzweil addressed the vagueness of the criteria used in the open letter and showed his concern about the coordination issue that could arise from people following the request. He believes that stopping AI research could hinder the development in medical, educational, renewable energy, and many other fields. Furthermore, Kurzweil pointed out that there are plenty of other ways to set safety guidelines while continuing the research. He believes the call of action suggested in the FLI letter falls short of the goal of balancing progress in AI with safety.
Kurzweil was an active participant of the Asilomar AI Principles Conference in 2017 and devoted his efforts in crafting ethical AI creation guidelines. It is evident that safety is an important subject matter however plans to protect must be tailored to the research in order to maximize the benefits of AI technology.
