Qatar Represents at ISO Meeting, Addressing Global Challenges
The State of Qatar, represented by the Qatar General Organization for Standards and Metrology (QGOSM), recently participated in the annual meeting of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in Brisbane, Australia. Led by QGOSM Chairman Eng. Mohammed bin Saud Al Musallam, the Qatari delegation has been actively representing the country in ISO since 1993.
The ISO annual meeting serves as a platform to exchange perspectives on standard specifications with the aim of making life easier, better, and safer. This year’s edition, themed Meeting global needs, focused on addressing the pressing challenges confronting our planet today and working towards joint solutions, as stated by QGOSM.
The meeting agenda of the ISO annual gathering featured various legislative sessions and panel discussions. One of the key highlights was the meeting of the Committee to Support Developing Countries (DEVCO), which witnessed the presence of ISO President Ulrika Francke and representatives from member states. Discussions revolved around reports from professional work teams and the progress of the action plan for developed countries.
In parallel, the State of Qatar actively participated in the 45th session of the ISO General Assembly. The session encompassed discussions on procedural and executive matters, including a report by the ISO Secretary-General on global challenges related to the environment, energy, and economy.
During the General Assembly, achievements and ongoing efforts within the ISO’s 2030 strategy were reviewed. The report emphasized future predictions and challenges regarding standardization and standard specifications, highlighting the readiness of ISO and its members to tackle the future.
Significant decisions were made during the ISO General Assembly, including the appointment of the organization’s president and the election of several members to vacant seats on the ISO board of directors for the period from 2024 to 2026. Additionally, the vice-president of ISO policies for 2024-2025 was chosen. As representatives of Qatar, QGOSM was actively involved in the selection process for the board of directors.
The meeting also encompassed various workshops and panel discussions on crucial topics such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), combating climate change, cybersecurity threats, food waste reduction, and the reduction of plastic waste. The participants emphasized the important role that international standard specifications and member states’ engagement can play in addressing these topics and proposing practical solutions.
The engagement of the State of Qatar and QGOSM in the ISO annual meeting exemplifies their commitment to promoting global cooperation and addressing universal challenges through standardization efforts. By actively participating in international forums, Qatar strives to contribute to creating a better and safer future for all.
