Punjab Police Partners with IIT Ropar to Establish AI and Machine Learning Lab

Punjab Police has taken a significant step forward in modernizing its operations by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar for the establishment of an in-house Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) Lab. This collaboration aims to bring AI-driven modern policing to the state, in line with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s vision.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Ram Singh, ADGP Technical Services Punjab; Professor Rajeev Ahuja, Director of IIT Ropar; and Gaurav Yadav, DGP Punjab. Sandeep Kaur Sandhu, SP Technical Services Punjab, and Santosh Kumar Vipparthi, Assistant Professor at IIT Ropar, were also present.

DGP Gaurav Yadav expressed his gratitude to CM Mann for his unwavering support in the modernization of Punjab Police. He emphasized that this collaboration would pave the way for various technological breakthroughs and enable the utilization of cutting-edge technologies for predictive policing, crime pattern recognition and analysis, facial recognition, and intelligent decision-making.

By leveraging AI, the police can detect criminal activities and fraud by identifying patterns and trends in vast amounts of data. On the other hand, ML algorithms can help understand criminal behavior and allocate resources accordingly. Additionally, the AI and ML lab will optimize the deployment of manpower based on real-time data.

ADGP Ram Singh highlighted the potential of machine learning and artificial intelligence to transform law enforcement agencies’ operations in the current era. He expressed that this initiative would enhance law enforcement capabilities, improve public safety, and foster innovation in AI-driven security solutions.

The lab will also eliminate time-consuming paperwork and automate report generation, saving valuable time for officers and administrative staff. Furthermore, AI-driven dashboards will provide real-time analytics and insights into ongoing operations and events, enhancing situational awareness for law enforcement agencies.

This strategic partnership between Punjab Police and IIT Ropar reflects a commitment to revolutionize law enforcement practices and enhance security measures throughout Punjab. The utilization of AI and ML technologies will undoubtedly contribute to efficient and effective policing.

By establishing the first-of-its-kind in-house AI and ML Lab, Punjab Police is positioning itself as an innovator in the field of modern policing. This collaboration with IIT Ropar marks a significant milestone in bringing the power of AI and ML to the forefront of law enforcement in Punjab.
