Professor Applauds AI Progress but Highlights Limitations of ChatGPT for Education

Date:

Professor Paul Cerkez, assistant professor of Computing Sciences at Coastal Carolina University, has analyzed the possibilities of artificial intelligence. He noticed the capabilities of ChatGPT, an online software powered by OpenAI. It is capable of understanding context, sentiment, and other complexities. It can generate programming code, solve complex math related tasks or even compose essays. It not only learns by understanding keywords and patterns, it is able to form its own sentences that often imitate human nature.

Rather than scanning Internet search engines to try and find solutions, ChatGPT stores trillions of responses, making it a more powerful and efficient tool. Dr Cerkez projects it is going to be more widely used in the future, similar to what is available with Google; however, the accuracy is still an issue since it receives input from all sources of the Internet, which may not all be accurate or relevant.

Furthermore, ChatGPT has caused some to be concerned about whether students are in fact learning when relying on this tool for essay composition or mathematical assignments. Dr Cerkez feels there is a lack of “digesting” by students, with the tool providing the necessary answers to questions without the student gaining a proper understanding. He has therefore decided to include in his syllabus that any assignment or task completed using ChatGPT will receive an automatic ‘F’.

The company OpenAI is a research laboratory based in San Francisco which focuses on artificial intelligence to solve real-world problems. It was founded in late 2015 with a mission to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, without an intentional disadvantage to any other individuals. OpenAI is funded by some of the world’s most influential investors, including the likes of Elon Musk, Microsoft and Amazon. It is known for its invention of the artificial intelligence-powered application of ChatGPT.

He has concluded that ChatGPT is a unique, groundbreaking application that has the potential to be widely used in the near future. His own analysis has raised alarm bells about ChatGPT’s accuracy and potency, and he has taken the initiative to stipulate regulations for its use in his educational environment.
