Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has urged affluent Nigerians to address the nation’s water scarcity and provide Almajiri children access to formal Western education.
In a speech delivered in Abuja, Obi called on 200,000 wealthy individuals to contribute to drilling one borehole each in various locations throughout Nigeria to alleviate the critical need for clean water. Each borehole costs approximately N5 million, and Obi has already initiated ten projects, with plans for ten more to tackle the water scarcity issue.
Additionally, Obi emphasized the importance of extending formal schooling to Almajiri children learning the Qur’an, incorporating subjects like English, Mathematics, and Sciences into their curriculum. He visited the Madarasatul Hidayyatul Auladi Muslimima Almajiri school in Kaduna State, where he witnessed the students’ potential and envisioned a future where they excel in diverse fields.
Obi stressed the significance of government support to complement these efforts and eliminate wastage, particularly in education, especially in Northern Nigeria. He highlighted the need for concerted action to address the challenges of water scarcity and educational access in the country.
