President Biden to Hold Online Meeting With Big Tech CEOs on AI Safety

Date:

As concerns over the safety of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) continue to mount, White House officials, including Vice President Kamala Harris, will meet with leaders of Big Tech companies later this month. Those leading the meeting are aiming to address national security issues raised by AI, especially when it comes to cybersecurity, biosecurity, and safety.

Invited to join the White House meeting are CEOs from Alphabet, Anthropic, Microsoft, and OpenAI, according to the White House fact sheet. President Joe Biden has expressed his expectation that these companies “must make sure their products are safe before making them available to the public”. In addition, the White House has announced the commitment of AI developers like Anthropic, Google, Hugging Face, Microsoft, NVIDIA, OpenAI, and Stability AI to participate in a public evaluation of existing AI systems during the AI Village at DEF CON 31.

The Biden administration has released a series of plans to tackle the potential implications of the tech. Governments from across the globe, such as the European Union, are introducing new regulations for the technology. The EU’s proposed AI Act, for example, will be the first law for AI by a major regulator. Meanwhile, the White House has promised up to $140 million in funding for launching new AI research institutes and independent assessments for existing AI systems.

Anthropic is a software platform that assists developers in creating safe, secure, and performant AI-driven applications. The company recently released Anthropic 3.2, an improved version of its AI platform that comes with enhanced capabilities and improved scalability. Their mission aligns with the Biden administration’s, working to ensure the security and safety of AI technology before unleashing it to the public.

As Vice President, she has encouraged the use of cutting-edge technology to assist in disaster relief efforts and has already created a task counsel on the employment of technology in disaster assistance. She has also supported AI research efforts and responsible governance and oversight of the new technology. This meeting at the White House shows her commitment to furthering the use of AI and its safety.
