The Prime Minister described deepfake as a challenge for the entire world. PM Modi warned that if terrorist organizations gain access to AI weapons, it could have a significant impact on global security. He stressed the importance of developing strategies to counter this potential threat.
Last month, PM Modi urged journalists to educate the public about Artificial Intelligence and Deepfake. He cited an incident where a manipulated video of himself singing had been widely shared. The incident drew attention to the misuse of AI, as the video was digitally altered and falsely attributed to the Prime Minister. The circulation of deepfake content has sparked criticism from politicians and celebrities alike.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India’s Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, also raised concerns about social media platforms’ inability to address deepfakes and misinformation. Chandrasekhar emphasized the need for internet-based platforms to comply with the IT rules implemented in April 2023. The Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued an advisory directing social media companies to take swift action against deepfake and rule-violating content.
Under the IT Rules of 2021, social media platforms are required to remove such content within 36 hours of it being reported. The IT Ministry emphasizes that timely action should be taken to disable access to deepfakes and ensure compliance with regulations. By expediting the removal of violating content, the aim is to minimize the spread of misinformation and safeguard online users.
