Prime Minister Modi recently laid the foundation stone for three semiconductor projects, with a collective worth of approximately Rs 1.25 lakh crore. As part of the ‘India’s Techade: Chips for Viksit Bharat’ program, he addressed the youth of India, emphasizing his vision to position India as a global hub for semiconductor design, manufacturing, and technology development, aiming to create more employment opportunities for the country’s youth.
During the event, PM Modi spoke about the significance of ‘Made in India chip’ and ‘designed in India chip’ in leading India towards self-reliance, especially in the fast-paced, technology-driven 21st century. He commended India’s efforts towards progress and self-sufficiency, highlighting the country’s expanding role in the global supply chain. PM Modi expressed his belief in the transformative power of a confident youth, stating that their collective efforts could positively impact India’s future.
The construction of the semiconductor fabrication facility at Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) by Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL), under the revised scheme for semiconductor fabs in India, marks a significant milestone towards achieving PM Modi’s vision. With a total investment of Rs 91,000 crore, this facility is poised to become India’s first commercial semiconductor fab.
Furthermore, Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) is set to establish the Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OST) facility in Morigaon, Assam, with an investment of approximately Rs 27,000 crore. Additionally, the OST facility in Sanand will be developed by CG Power and Industrial Solutions Limited under the revised scheme for Semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP), with an estimated investment of around Rs 7,500 crore.
These upcoming semiconductor facilities play a vital role in strengthening India’s semiconductor ecosystem, promising employment opportunities for thousands of youth within the industry and related sectors such as technology, artificial intelligence, electronics, and telecommunications. The initiatives outlined by PM Modi underscore India’s commitment to technological advancement and economic growth through self-reliance and innovation.
