PM Modi: Alternative Dispute Resolution Vital for Justice Delivery in India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday highlighted the importance of technology and alternative dispute resolution in justice delivery. Speaking at the concluding ceremony of the Gauhati High Court’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, he said that bringing technology into the justice delivery system, especially in remote areas such as the northeast, will help to speed up the process.

The Prime Minister noted the importance of property cards to reduce the amount of property-related cases and the utilisation of drones to map properties and provide solutions through the PM Swamitva Yojana. He also mentioned the role of the Supreme Court’s E-Committee in modernizing the justice system, and highlighted the vast potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to be implemented in this cause.

Pointing out the role of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) systems in judicial delivery, Modi stated that the North East is particularly rich in traditional dispute resolution methods and should be taught at law schools nationally. He pointed to the need for laws to be written in an accessible language for ordinary people, and the launching of BHASHINI portal for citizens to access the internet in their native language. He further spoke about provisions of the budget for the third phase of E-Court mission this year.

The prime minister paid tribute to Bhim Rao Ambedkar on his birth anniversary, while stressing on the role of the judiciary to meet the aspirations of 21st-century India. He also advocated for the repeal of archaic laws and the decriminalization of business terms to reduce cases brought to court, as well as the government’s sensitivity towards those in custody for minor crimes and who have difficulties affording bail.

Additionally, he launched the Assam Cop mobile app, which was designed by the Assam Police and will help facilitate accused and vehicle searches from the databases of the Crime & Criminal Network Tracking System (CCTNS) and the VAHAN national register.
