Fans of the supernatural thriller Oxenfree can rejoice as Netflix is preparing for the launch of its sequel game, Oxenfree II: Lost Signals, set to launch on July 12 across multiple platforms including Netflix, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 & PS5, and Steam. Night School Studio, the gaming studio which Netflix acquired in 2021, is behind the development of the game, which was originally planned for a 2022 release, but delayed until 2023.
Oxenfree II: Lost Signals continues the story fans already know and love, picking up five years after the events of the original game. Players will return to Camena and be reunited with an all-new cast of characters while they unravel the mystery behind the unnatural radio frequency disturbances. The game’s narrative is highlighted by its captivating storyline and relatable characters. The game also has localized ways of playing and interacting, as it comes with support for many languages including Arabic, Chinese, Croatian, Czech, Danish and Dutch, amongst many others.
Netflix has been actively expanding on its line of gaming, spearheading with its own internal teams and an expansion of Studios acquired. Last year, Netflix acquired Spry Fox, Next Games, and Boss Fight Entertainment and recently established its own gaming Studio in both Southern California and Helsinki, Finland. Netflix has revealed that the platform, which started its gaming adventure in November 2021 has since then released 55 titles, with 40 of them slated for launch this year and 70 projects currently in development with its partners. Additionally, 16 games are being developed by its in-house studios.
Marko Lastikka, the co-founder and general manager of the Zynga Helsinki game development studio, leads the team in Finland and is an instrumental figure in its success. Leanne Loombe, Netflix VP of External Games is one of the persons leading the charge expansion. She stated in a briefing last month that the company is mainly focused on mobile but is working on its own cloud streaming technology.
