Opera and Google Collaboration Brings Gemini AI to Opera Browser
Browser maker Opera has joined forces with tech giant Google to integrate Gemini AI into the Opera browser. The collaboration involves leveraging Google Cloud services to enhance Opera’s Aria browser AI capabilities.
Opera’s Aria browser incorporates multiple large language models (LLMs) to create an advanced AI browsing experience. Some of the LLMs utilized in Opera’s Composer AI engine include Meta’s Llama, Mixtral from Mistral AI, as well as local LLMs like Google’s Gemma and Vicuna.
Per Wetterdal, EVP Partnerships at Opera, expressed excitement over the deepening collaboration with Google, which spans over 20 years. The companies are focusing on generative AI to enhance Opera’s suite of browser AI services.
Key features expected in Aria include image generation and voice output. Google’s Imagen 2 model will power generic image creation, while Imagen 3, announced during IO 2024, is also anticipated to contribute to the browser in the future.
Eva Fors, Managing Director of Google Cloud Nordic Region, emphasized Google’s commitment to open access to its AI infrastructure to empower organizations to leverage generative AI effectively.
With the latest AI capabilities, Aria aims to provide conversational-like responses based on Google’s text-to-audio model. Opera’s pursuit of a modular AI model dates back to the launch of Opera One in June of last year, powered by OpenAI’s GPT model. The addition of ChatGPT in February further enriched the browser’s functionality.
In line with its commitment to innovation, Opera became one of the first browsers to launch blockchain capabilities in 2022, although updates on its crypto activities have been sparse recently.
The collaboration between Opera and Google highlights the importance of integrating advanced AI technologies into popular browsers to enhance user experiences and functionality. Stay tuned for more updates on how Gemini AI transforms the Opera browsing experience.
