OpenAI’s Sam Altman Expresses Frustration Over Chip Shortage Delaying ChatGPT Development

OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, admitted during an off-the-record meeting in London that a global shortage of computer chips is hindering the progress of the company’s flagship project, ChatGPT. Altman reportedly complained during the discussion that a lack of computing power has prevented OpenAI from implementing larger context windows, limiting the amount of information the chatbot can process when responding to specific user prompts. OpenAI, like many other tech firms, is experiencing industry-wide shortages of graphics processing units (GPUs), which are required to train and run complex AI software. The shortage has been so severe that AI start-ups have also struggled to obtain access to servers at major cloud providers such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft.
