OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the advanced language model designed for conversation, has made a groundbreaking stride by revolutionizing the way users can interact with it through custom instructions. The company initially introduced this feature to beta users who subscribed to ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month. However, OpenAI has now extended the availability of this feature to all users worldwide, regardless of their subscription status.
Taking user feedback into account, OpenAI recognized the need to minimize the friction of starting every ChatGPT conversation from scratch. Their conversations with users from 22 countries have emphasized the importance of steerability in allowing the model to adapt to individual contexts and cater to specific needs. Addressing this, OpenAI stated in a release back in July that ChatGPT would consider custom instructions for each conversation going forward, eliminating the hassle of repeating preferences or information in every interaction.
To illustrate the impact of this feature, OpenAI provided an example where a teacher creating a lesson plan no longer needs to reiterate that they are teaching third grade. After saving this information through the custom instructions feature, ChatGPT will remember it and incorporate it into subsequent conversations.
Although the new custom instructions feature is not currently accessible in the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK), OpenAI has assured users that it plans to extend its availability to these regions in the near future.
For web users, accessing the feature is straightforward: click on your name, go to Settings, navigate to Beta features, and opt into Custom instructions. Going forward, Custom instructions will appear in the dropdown menu when you click on your name. On iOS, the process involves navigating to Settings, selecting New Features, and enabling Custom instructions, which will then become accessible in the settings.
