OpenAI made headlines this week by unveiling the new GPT-4o AI model during their Sprint Updates event. The upgraded model boasts enhanced capabilities in voice, text, and image recognition, as well as the ability to engage in human-like conversations complete with emotions. According to a press release, the GPT-4o is not only 2x faster but also 50 percent cheaper than its predecessor, the GPT-4 Turbo. Additionally, OpenAI announced a collaboration with Reddit to train AI models using the platform’s vast repository of real-time human conversations.
Not to be outdone, Google took the stage at their annual developer conference, Google I/O, this week. CEO Sundar Pichai kicked off the event by showcasing the latest advancements in AI, including the unveiling of Gemini 1.5 Pro. Google also introduced Gemini for Workspace, Android, Photos, and other services, as well as launching Gemini 1.5 Flash, a lightweight AI model, and Project Astra focusing on the future of virtual assistants.
In other AI-related news, NASA appointed David Salvagnini as its first Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer, expanding his role to include strategic planning for AI initiatives. Microsoft announced that customers can now choose between AMD and Nvidia AI chips to better suit their needs and budgets, showcasing new Cobalt 100 custom processors and flagship MI300X AI chips as alternatives to Nvidia’s H100 GPUs. These developments mark significant milestones in the ever-evolving landscape of artificial intelligence technology.
