The creators of a conservative chatbot, GIPPR, powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT, have shut it down due to pressure from OpenAI to censor its responses. The chatbot provides users with answers from a conservative perspective and is part of TUSK, a pro-free speech and anti-censorship web browser. According to TUSK founder and CEO Jeff Bermant, OpenAI informed them that GIPPR was not in compliance with their policies related to deceptive activity and coordinated inauthentic behaviour, which could endanger users and third parties. The creators disputed this and believed the only reason for the shutdown was that GIPPR did not promote a leftist agenda.
Many believe this is yet another example of attempted censorship from the left on the conservative group, further fueling the cancel culture. Bermant said his inspiration for GIPPR came after he interacted with ChatGPT and received left-wing answers to his questions about cultural issues and politics. Bermant realized that ChatGPT was likely programmed with a very progressive bias, which led him to create his own version using the same OpenAI software.
TUSK intends to reintroduce GIPPR and urged users to help them in supporting free speech on the internet. They believe that conservative groups are subject to oppressive cancel culture that now includes AI and are expected to live in a society that follows progressive left. Bermant said, It’s time for a truthful AI chatbot to take the market by storm and remove the barriers the radical left and Big Tech have put in place to allow all conservatives to enjoy the benefits of AI, without fear of being canceled or shamed for your beliefs.
OpenAI has not commented on TUSK’s claims.
