OpenAI Suffers a Data Breach: Confirmed

Date:

OpenAI, the company behind popular AI technologies such as DALL-E and ChatGPT, recently confirmed that they had suffered a data breach. This news has come to light after the infamous T-Mobile data breach, proving that no organizations are invincible when it comes to security breaches.

OpenAI were using the open-source library Redis and it was this that was the cause of their data breach. Open source libraries are highly vulnerable, and no amount of precautions could have stopped the breach from occurring.

OpenAI confirmed that the breach allowed threat actors to get ahold of user data from ChatGPT. Luckily, the data that was acquired wasn’t too severe in its nature, with the threat actors mainly gaining access to user chat histories. Nonetheless, this puts a lot of users at risk who used ChatGPT as a confidante and spilled out their personal information with the bot. As well, there could have even been access to additional data such as the names, emails, payment addresses and even the last four digits of the credit cards and its expiry dates.

OpenAI have since patched up the vulnerability and the services are now safe to use. In the future, everybody should be aware of the potential issues that come with open-source libraries, and an increase in security measures should be taken seriously.

OpenAI is a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence research laboratory, founded in December 2015. The company works on developing AI technologies for the betterment of society. From DALL-E to ChatGPT, the company has created a myriad of cutting edge technologies.
