AI regulation has become an increasingly important topic over the past few years, with different nations debating and legislating ways to govern the growing technology. OpenAI, the creator of the AI sensation ChatGPT, recently proposed its own take on regulating AI, particularly superintelligence.
OpenAI recently published a blog post on May 22 which explained the need to regulate AI due to its rapid advancement and the potential implications it could have regarding the world. The post proposed regulating AI similar to the way that nuclear energy is currently regulated. This includes the eventual creation of an agency similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Authors of the post, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and Ilya Sutskever, argued that it would be necessary to specify the capability threshold beyond which the development of AI should be regulated. Furthermore, OpenAI plans on encouraging collective decision-making when it comes to the regulation of AI in order to guarantee a democratic process.
The importance of regulating AI has not been lost on tech leaders. During a congressional hearing, Altman declined the opportunity to become America’s AI regulator and instead urged for the US to take responsibility for the regulation. China, on the other hand, has taken a more extreme approach towards AI regulation, implementing bans and limitations on the industry.
