OpenAI Partners with Axel Springer to Advance AI-Empowered Journalism, Germany

Date:

We want to explore the opportunities of AI-empowered journalism — to bring quality, societal relevance and the business model of journalism to the next level, said Axel Springer CEO. OpenAI has reached an agreement with media multinational Axel Springer SE to use news content from Politico, Business Insider, and other European outlets to train its AI models. As part of the three-year deal, OpenAI will pay tens of millions of euros to Axel Springer, though the exact amount has not been disclosed. This partnership comes amid debates over the use of copyrighted material by AI companies, resulting in legal disputes. OpenAI previously entered into a similar agreement with The Associated Press in July. The deal with Axel Springer will also allow OpenAI to incorporate recent articles from the media conglomerate into its ChatGPT chatbot. Users will have access to summaries of selected articles, including those behind paywalls, attributed to Axel Springer publications. The CEO of Axel Springer expressed excitement about the global partnership, emphasizing the aim to enhance AI-empowered journalism and elevate its quality, relevance, and business prospects.
