OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, has voiced concerns about the European Union’s (EU) recently proposed AI regulations. These regulations would require generative AI firms, such as OpenAI, to report the copyrighted material used to train its systems. However, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman has remarked that the drafted restrictions are too extreme and believes revisions are forthcoming.
Critics of the draft agenda argue that AI businesses exploit the work of singers, artists, and performers by teaching their systems to replicate certain works without proper credit. In an effort to mitigate the risks associated with AI implementation, Altman convened with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and other leaders of AI companies to discuss the need for legal oversight and voluntary practices.
At the most recent G7 summit in Hiroshima, world leaders discussed the importance of regulating AI and forming trustworthy systems. The European Commission plans to create an AI-related pact with Alphabet, Google’s parent company, before any legislation is passed. EU Commissioner Thierry Breton also met with Google CEO Sundar Pichai to discuss the need for transparency and the formation of an international AI pact.
