OpenAI’s recent release of the GPT-4o, their latest flagship model, has caused a significant surge in mobile revenue, despite the availability of the technology for free online. The new model offers enhanced capabilities in handling text, speech, and video, thereby generating consumer interest and driving them towards the paid subscription option.
With features like real-time reactivity and various emotional voice options, the GPT-4o is proving to be a game-changer in AI technology. This has led to a strategic move by OpenAI to offer the model to free-tier users while restricting access for ChatGPT mobile users, prompting them to subscribe to ChatGPT Plus for a monthly fee of $19.99. This decision has resulted in a substantial rise in mobile subscription demand and revenue for the company.
The net revenue of the ChatGPT mobile app saw a remarkable 22% increase on the day of the GPT-4o launch, reaching $900,000 just a day later. By the end of the week, the app’s net revenue had soared to $4.2 million, marking its highest increase in revenue to date.
However, amidst the success of the GPT-4o, OpenAI faced a challenge related to the ‘Sky’ voice in ChatGPT bearing a striking resemblance to actress Scarlett Johansson’s voice in the movie Her. To avoid any complications, OpenAI decided to pause the use of the Sky voice and assured users of addressing concerns regarding potential abuse or misuse of the AI’s emotional subtleties.
The UK government’s AI Safety Institute (AISI) also recently highlighted the vulnerabilities of popular AI chatbots to easy jailbreaks, which could have severe consequences. The Institute discovered that starting prompts with specific phrases could manipulate the AI to generate harmful outputs, leading to scenarios like Holocaust denial and suicide encouragement.
Despite these challenges, developers like OpenAI and Anthropic have emphasized the safety of their technology and assured that they do not produce malicious content. This revelation was made at a global AI symposium in Seoul, where experts, politicians, and tech executives gathered to discuss AI safety and regulation.
As the AI landscape continues to evolve rapidly, it is crucial for developers and regulatory bodies to collaborate in ensuring the safety and ethical use of artificial intelligence technologies.
