OpenAI Introduces Multi-Factor Authentication for ChatGPT Accounts, Enhancing Security

Date:

OpenAI has recently announced the introduction of multi-factor authentication (MFA) for ChatGPT users, aimed at enhancing account security. This long-awaited feature allows users to enable an extra layer of protection when logging into their accounts.

To set up MFA, users will need to have an authenticator app installed on their mobile device. By scanning a QR code, they can add Time-based One-Time Passwords (TOTP) to the app, which will generate ever-changing 6-digit codes required for login. Additionally, a recovery code will be provided during setup for account recovery purposes.

Experts recommend using an authenticator app over SMS codes to prevent hacking attempts, as SMS messages can be intercepted through SIM swapping scams. While MFA is a crucial security measure, it is not foolproof against certain hacking techniques.

It is worth noting that users cannot change the authentication app once MFA is set up without disabling and reenabling the feature. Currently, only authenticator apps are supported for MFA in standard ChatGPT accounts, without the option for SMS codes or security keys.

Overall, the implementation of MFA in ChatGPT is a significant step towards reinforcing users’ account security and protecting against potential cyber threats.
