Former OpenAI Employee Discusses Termination Over Information Leak
Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former employee at OpenAI, recently shed light on the reasons behind his termination from the company. Aschenbrenner, a close associate of OpenAI’s chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, revealed that he was dismissed for allegedly leaking information.
The leaked information pertained to a brainstorming document that Aschenbrenner shared with external researchers. The document focused on OpenAI’s safety measures, which Aschenbrenner believed were insufficient in safeguarding against the theft of crucial algorithmic secrets by foreign actors.
According to Aschenbrenner, sharing safety ideas with external researchers for feedback was a common practice at OpenAI at the time. He emphasized that it was normal to seek input from external sources on such matters. The document he shared was his own creation, and he had redacted certain sensitive information from the external version.
Aschenbrenner further explained that he had raised concerns about OpenAI’s security measures in an internal memo, highlighting their inadequacy in protecting valuable information from potential breaches. Following a security incident at OpenAI, he decided to share his memo with board members, which ultimately led to a warning from HR for sharing the information.
Despite Aschenbrenner’s claims that his termination was linked to the security memo he shared, an OpenAI spokesperson stated that the issues he raised with the Board of Directors did not directly result in his dismissal. The spokesperson also refuted many of Aschenbrenner’s assertions.
