OpenAI Ceases to Use API Client Data for Machine Learning Training

Date:

OpenAI, a renowned artificial intelligence (AI) research company, has been making waves in the industry towards creating and developing large language models for their Chatbot, ChatGPT. Recently, their CEO Sam Altman have made a major announcement, in that OpenAI have decided to no longer collect customer data for training purposes for the ChatGPT model. OpenAI has subsequently updated its Terms of Service to reflect these changes in the beginning of March, though this update didn’t draw too much attention. Despite this, those using ChatGPT directly need to be wary, as the data is still being used for training, even if they go into “incognito” mode.

In an interview, CEO Sam Altman expressed that customers wanted the data to not be used and that the company was in a “listening state” so the decision to change their plans was the right move. Samsung, taking the extra step of protecting user data and accounts, had announced a ban on its employees using chatbots like ChatGPT. This had stemmed from potential security risks that could occur during collection and usage of such customer data.

This major announcement came shortly after the Competition and Markets Authority’s decision to start investigating how these generative AI products affect competition and consumers. To contain any issues that could arise from these products, their usage and pipelines have also been altered. An example of this was the implementation of guard rails to prevent users from getting bots to say offensive remarks. If a request arose for something of this nature, the bots are pre-programmed to recall pre-written routines, so that they may inform the user that they can’t help with that request.
