Open Robotics has officially launched the Open Source Robotics Alliance (OSRA) to enhance the governance of open-source robotics software projects and support the Robot Operating System (ROS) Suite community. This new initiative will utilize a mixed membership and meritocratic model inspired by successful foundations like The Linux Foundation and the Eclipse Foundation.
The OSRA is welcoming all community stakeholders to participate in overseeing, directing, developing, and supporting the open source projects of OSRF, including ROS, Gazebo, Open-RMF, and their infrastructure. Collaboration across the robotics ecosystem is key to the success of this initiative, with early support coming from major organizations such as NVIDIA, Intrinsic, and Qualcomm Technologies.
NVIDIA, as an inaugural platinum member of OSRA, aims to advance open-source robotics by integrating accelerated computing and AI into ROS 2 development. Intrinsic, another platinum member, emphasizes their commitment to the open-source community through contributions to projects like ROS, Gazebo, and Open-RMF. Additionally, Qualcomm Technologies joins the platinum membership group to drive the growth of open-source robotics software and nurture the ROS Suite developer community.
The OSRA also includes other prominent members such as Apex.ai, Zettascale, Clearpath Robotics, Ekumen, eProsima, PickNik, and Silicon Valley Robotics. Membership applications are now open for organizations and individuals interested in joining the OSRA and shaping the future of open source robotics. Bosch, ROS-Industrial, and more organizations are expected to join soon, highlighting the growing support for open-source robotics within the industry.
Overall, the establishment of the Open Source Robotics Alliance is set to elevate the development and governance of open-source robotics software, fostering collaboration and innovation within the ROS community for years to come.
