The report, written by a senior software engineer at Google, Luke Sernau, reveals that Open Source engineers have been quietly leading the competition by lapping up the tech giants.
The document highlights that open-source engineers have cost-effectively solved massive problems, such as running AI models on a phone with a Google Pixel 6. Moreover, Sernau cites that these developers have made progress faster and with better customizations, in addition to privacy. Though he acknowledged that Google and OpenAI still have slightly better-quality models, he asserted that open source engineers are still ahead of the race.
Google and OpenAI have not responded to requests for comments on this discovery.
