Graphics card manufacturer Nvidia has secured over $1bn in orders from Chinese cloud giants Alibaba and ByteDance. ByteDance, the parent company of social app TikTok, has made orders totalling 100,000 A100 and H800 accelerator cards. The chips will support the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) workloads. H800 production only began in March 2023, but ByteDance’s 2023 orders for Nvidia GPUs are expected to rival the number of cards sold in China by the company in 2022. Alibaba has also been purchasing Nvidia graphics cards for its own AI research, buying tens of thousands of units in 2018 and 2019.
