Nvidia has unveiled a major update to its Nvidia Omniverse platform, announcing new applications and services at Siggraph 2023. The update aims to improve and optimize 3D pipelines and industrial workflows using the OpenUSD framework and generative AI.
The Omniverse platform facilitates connection, description, and simulation across various 3D tools and applications. With this update, it has been enhanced to enable the creation of virtual worlds and streamline industrial digitalization workflows. Companies like Cesium, Convai, Move AI, SideFX Houdini, and Wonder Dynamics have already connected to Omniverse through OpenUSD.
Some key highlights of this update include advancements to Omniverse Kit, the engine for developing OpenUSD native applications and extensions. Additionally, improvements have been made to the Nvidia Omniverse Audio2Face foundation app and spatial-computing capabilities. Omniverse Kit now features the Omniverse Kit Extension Registry, a central repository that allows developers to easily access, share, and manage over 600 core Omniverse extensions. This enhancement simplifies custom app building by enabling the toggling of functionality on and off.
New developers joining OpenUSD and Omniverse will benefit from developer templates and resources that reduce coding efforts. Efficiency and user experience have also been improved with new rendering optimizations that leverage Nvidia’s Ada Lovelace architecture enhancements in Nvidia RTX GPUs. The Omniverse RTX Renderer now fully integrates DLSS 3 technology, while a new AI denoiser enables real-time 4K path tracing of large industrial scenes. The spatial integration powered by native RTX has also been enriched, providing new extended-reality (XR) developer tools that offer flexibility in experiencing 3D projects and virtual worlds.
Notable updates can be seen in the Omniverse foundation applications as well. The Omniverse USD Composer has been upgraded to facilitate the assembly of large-scale, OpenUSD-based scenes. Furthermore, Omniverse Audio2Face now grants access to generative AI APIs for realistic facial animations and gestures based solely on an audio file. To assist developers in implementing and deploying OpenUSD pipelines and applications, new Omniverse Cloud APIs have been built.
