Nigeria Unbundles Computer Science Programs, Filling IT Skills Gap for Digital Revolution
Nigeria is taking significant steps to bridge the existing information technology (IT) skills gap by unbundling computer science programs at polytechnics. The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) announced that the move would allow the country to build more capacity in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), network and cloud computing, software and web development, and cybersecurity and data protection.
Through a partnership with CC Hub, NITDA conducted an IT Skills Gap Assessment and identified 12 in-demand IT skills both in Nigeria and abroad. By unbundling the computer science program into four specializations, Nigeria aims to equip its graduates with the necessary skills to navigate the digital revolution. This move positions polytechnics at the forefront of nurturing young Nigerians capable of tackling specific IT challenges and capitalizing on emerging technologies.
NITDA recognizes the immense potential of AI, network and cloud computing, software and web development, as well as cybersecurity and data protection in shaping the future of Nigeria’s IT sector. The establishment of the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) and the Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation (ONDI) reflects NITDA’s commitment to nurturing talent and equipping interns and corps members with the skills needed for success in the digital realm.
The unbundling of computer science programs was announced by the Executive Director of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Prof. Idris Bugaje. In a letter addressed to heads of polytechnics and relevant institutions, Bugaje stated that floating the four courses aligns with the emerging trends in the IT sector. Students who have already been admitted into the former computer science program will be phased out by 2025.
NITDA emphasizes the need for collaboration between educational institutions, industry stakeholders, and regulatory bodies to ensure the successful implementation of these specialized fields. The growth of the IT sector and the enhancement of the nation’s workforce are at the forefront of NITDA’s goals.
By prioritizing the development of these high-demand IT skills, Nigeria aims to cultivate a workforce that can propel the country into the digital era. The unbundling of computer science programs reflects the government’s commitment to empowering its youth with the expertise needed to meet the challenges and seize the opportunities presented by the digital revolution.
With this move, Nigeria is positioning itself as a hub of IT talent and innovation, ready to contribute to the global digital landscape. By equipping its graduates with in-demand skills, the country is taking a decisive step towards building a prosperous and technologically advanced future.
This development has garnered positive attention within the IT sector, and stakeholders are hopeful that this move will not only fill the existing skills gap but also propel Nigeria to the forefront of digital transformation in Africa.
