Next Generation iMac and iMac Pro: Latest Rumors and Info

Date:

Rumors are swirling that Apple is developing a 24-inch iMac and an all-new “Pro” iMac for a possible launch at the end of this year. In mid-2022, Mark Gurman at Bloomberg reported that Apple is working on at least two iMac models, likely featuring the “M3” series of chips. He added that Apple might launch the updated 24-inch iMac with the standard M3 chip in 2023 and is also working on a high-end iMac model.

In March 2021, Apple discontinued the iMac Pro and in March 2022, Apple discontinued the 27-inch Intel-based version of the iMac, leaving the 24-inch iMac with the M1 chip as the only remaining iMac model. In April 2021, Apple debuted the Mac Studio and its matching Studio Display to temporarily fill the void left by the discontinued iMac models. It is unclear whether these products will be enough for professional users.

Despite some reports claiming that an iMac Pro is not in development, several sources claim that a more powerful, larger iMac is still on the way. Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants believes Apple is working on an iMac with a 27-inch mini-LED display with ProMotion, which suggests a future “iMac Pro” model. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also thinks a 27-inch iMac Pro model will launch in 2023 alongside a new Mac Pro.

The new iMac model expected to arrive later this year or early next year may contain an M3 chip. These chips will likely be made with TSMC’s 3nm technology and offer better performance and efficiency than the M1 or M2 chips. Production of the chips may begin by the third quarter of 2023.
