South Korea has recently established a Defense AI Research Center to enhance its military capabilities through the development of artificial intelligence technology. The new organization, launched at the Agency for Defense Development, aims to leverage AI to create advanced manned and unmanned complex systems critical for defense operations.
With a team of approximately 110 private researchers and military personnel, the center’s focus includes the development of AI-enabled technologies that provide superior awareness on the battlefield. Additionally, the center plans to identify AI requirements within the military and facilitate collaboration between industry, academia, and research institutions for the integration of private AI advancements into defense strategies.
Kwak Ki-ho, the chief of the new center, envisions it as a key hub for research and development in national defense AI technology. Defense Minister Shin emphasized the importance of advanced science and technology in building a robust military force, highlighting the goal of acquiring cutting-edge AI-driven defense capabilities to promote peace through strength.
