The latest update to Gmail’s Android app is set to bring the platform closer to its desktop version, thanks to the introduction of AI-powered email summaries. This new feature, aptly named Summarize this email, aims to offer users quick synopses of lengthy emails and complex threads, similar to what is currently available on the web version of Gmail.
Although still in its developmental stages for Android, the Summarize this email button has been spotted in the latest Gmail app version (2024.03.31.621006929) by AssembleDebug. Positioned just below the email’s subject, tapping this button currently does not elicit any response. However, based on the functionality on the web version, users can expect a panel or pop-up displaying a concise summary of the email content.
In addition to the Summarize this email feature, a dedicated Gemini option has been identified within the three-dot menu in email threads. While tapping this button currently leads to an empty panel, it is anticipated to provide seamless access to Google’s AI chatbot and other Gemini-related actions, including email summaries. These upcoming enhancements shed light on the AI-driven changes coming to Gmail, a key component of Google’s suite of services.
Users with access to Gemini for Google Workspace on the web can utilize the Ask Gemini function, which presents suggestions for next actions within an email conversation. As Gmail for Android integrates these AI-powered attributes, subscribers may benefit from enhanced productivity and efficiency in managing their email correspondence. While the precise rollout timeline for these features remains unclear, the imminent arrival of these upgrades signals Google’s commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence to streamline user experiences.
