NASA’s AI assistant for astronauts resembles ChatGPT

NASA is reportedly developing an AI-based system that allows astronauts to communicate with space vehicles using a natural-language interface. The planned space station, Lunar Gateway, will host the chatbot-like AI technology that will help astronauts conduct experiments and perform maneuvers without the need for complex manuals. The natural-language interface also enables astronauts to seek advice and alert them of interesting findings they see in the space. NASA aims to deploy the AI system for the upcoming Artemis mission to the moon. The agency is also planning to use AI and machine learning technologies to manage various systems when unoccupied. These include autonomous operations of science payloads, data transmission prioritization, health management, and more. Dr. Larissa Suzuki, who spoke at an IEEE meeting on next-gen space communication, expressed enthusiasm for the AI technology and emphasized that there will be conversational interactions between space vehicles and humans. According to Suzuki, the AI system would automatically fix data transmission glitches and outages, reducing the chances of endangering NASA and crew members in space missions. The system’s deployment is set for the Lunar Gateway, and NASA expects to integrate it with various space missions in the future.
