Munich-based company Quantum Systems has teamed up with Airbus Defence and Space in a research project focused on artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative, funded by the German Ministry of Defence, aims to demonstrate and analyze the AI building blocks required for swarms of tactical unmanned aerial systems (UAS).
Under the project, titled KITU 2 (Künstliche Intelligenz für taktische UAS; Artificial Intelligence for tactical UAS), each company will leverage its key strengths. Airbus Defence and Space will contribute trusted swarming algorithms, simulation environments, experimental hardware, and additional AI building blocks. Quantum Systems will provide the battle-proven Vector 2-in-1 tactical aerial reconnaissance platform, which boasts built-in AI edge-computing capabilities. Similarly, Spleenlab will contribute its expertise in AI edge software for swarming, including object recognition and robust navigation methods in communication denied environments.
Quantum Systems, founded in 2015, is currently working on a range of systems that will enter the market in 2024 and 2025, offering customers a seamless layered approach in terms of range, flight time, and payload capabilities.
The research endeavor also aligns with the joint Main Ground Combat Systems (MGCS) program between France and Germany, which aims to enhance the defensive and offensive capabilities of main battle tanks by integrating next-generation technology and multiple platforms. Additionally, the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program, involving France, Germany, and Spain, is developing a system that includes manned new generation fighters, unmanned aircraft, and new weapons and communications systems.
This collaboration between Quantum Systems, Airbus Defence and Space, and Spleenlab showcases the growing importance of AI in the field of tactical UAS. By harnessing the strengths and expertise of each company, they aim to advance the effectiveness of these unmanned systems in real-world scenarios.
With the support of the German Ministry of Defence, the research project is expected to yield valuable insights into the application of AI in tactical UAS, paving the way for further advancements in the field. The partnership between Quantum Systems and Airbus Defence and Space demonstrates the commitment of both companies to delivering innovative solutions that meet the evolving needs of the defense industry.
