More than Half of Single Men Would Use ChatGPT to Mislead Potential Dates: Kaspersky

Date:

Recent research by Kaspersky has found over half (54%) of single men would be open to using the new ChatGPT generative AI tool to ‘deceive’ potential dates, in a bid to make themselves appear funnier or smarter on a dating app. The findings of this research, titled ‘Date or DAIte?’ surveyed single men and women in the United Kingdom to understand how AI, specifically ChatGPT, is impacting the dating world.

As it turns out, the approach to AI-assisted conversations is already well underway, with 75% of all dating app users claiming they would be exploring the use of ChatGPT to deliver the perfect chat up line. Furthermore, 51% of single women confessed they would use the tool to speak to multiple partners at the same time in order to significantly increase their chances of success.

Although the potential convenience of a chatbot-assisted conversation may seem helpful, there is concern that technology like ChatGPT might lead to a new wave of ‘catfishing’. 57% of the respondents think using a chatbot in an online dating setting is dishonest. Crystal Cansdale, a dating expert from the app Inner Circle, stated that “authenticity is at the core of building relationships, and despite how ‘real’ a ChatGPT generated message can come across, it will only get you so far”.

This is why experts like David Emm, a principal security researcher at Kaspersky, urges people to maintain their vigilance when communicating with others online. If there is any suspicion of fraudulent activity, people should always verify the authenticity of who they are speaking with.
